Fixing a hole

I just finished reading this, which really struck a chord with me after my post from yesterday.  I think Hortense makes a series of good points, and I’m going to be throwing away all the copies of Fitness and Shape that I have stashed away because as she says, these are like heroin to someone with an ED.

  1. I think I remember having a problem with Fitness too, actually – well, several problems (after all, I only kept my subscription for a year) but I am reasonably sure that one of the nails in the coffin was how they dealt with body images. I’m not 100% sure on that but I seem to remember sitting on my couch a couple of years ago and having a discussion with you about how I was infuriated by… something in one issue, and I think it was that. It may not have been photos, I think it might have been something like very subtly encouraging women to eat fewer than 1,000 calories a day, or by encouraging a weight loss of higher than 2 lbs a week (and I think that 2 lbs a week is on the VERY high end of “okay” and shouldn’t be sustained for more than 2 weeks in a row) – anyway, I would swear it was SOMEthing. Wish I could remember now, but it’s not that important… bottom line, hell yeah.

  2. Just FYI, I have now read that Jezebel post, and man – going through those comments just makes me sad and infuriated. All the things I suspected about Fitness (and Shape and others, though Fitness was the only one I actually read) are pretty much true. 😦 I mostly read them only for the workouts, and those weren’t even all that good sometimes … I swear to god, I think some of them weren’t even actually physically possible. 😛 I also hate the focus on weight loss. Honestly, most people (especially men!) LIKE a lady with hips and a tummy – STOP TELLING US OTHERWISE. 😡
